About: Andrew

I have 20 years’ professional experience in editing and rewriting. After interning with the United Nations press office (UNIC London) I worked with the Commonwealth Secretariat for several years as a programme development consultant, speechwriter and in-house editor. At one time an associate lecturer in health and social care, I’ve worked with the University of Oxford Medical School, Oxford Brookes University, LSBU and others on curriculum development, student recruitment and public engagement.

I have a degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from the University of Oxford, where I was awarded a Michel Scholarship (1998), Gibbs Prize (1998) and Ives Prize (2000). I took legal studies courses (School of Law, University of Sussex) and have since edited texts on EU law and policy, among other fields.

I have worked freelance since 2008, alongside employment in teaching and lecturing. I have coached people from all walks of life in their writing practice, from book clients to students at different levels - pre-university, undergrad, postgrad - and on various pathways: business, vocational (agriculture, veterinary, health professions), STEM, arts, humanities, and social sciences.

As a Commissioning Editor for Nexus/Commonwealth publications (with Rupert Jones-Parry, formerly General Manager at Macmillan), I was responsible for sourcing and shaping contributions for conferences of Ministers and senior officials across the 53-country grouping.

Titles include: Commonwealth Education Partnerships, Commonwealth Health Partnerships, and Commonwealth Governance Handbook. Commonwealth Yearbook covered every department and work stream from economics, trade and climate change, to election monitoring and the rule of law, to gender equality and youth empowerment. I also commissioned and edited articles on all these themes from business and civil society.

I like projects where creative and critical thinking is required. My areas of strength include PhD-to-book projects and multi-author publications. I enjoy rapidly getting up to speed on new subjects and making ideas accessible.

Having worked with media, youth and women’s affairs specialists from many countries early in my career, I am well equipped for teamwork where good listening and cultural awareness is needed: coaching, conferencing, academic networking, co-teaching – and editing.

I am based in Shropshire, UK.
